One By One

One by one
they go.

First there was the kid in the river,
then your grandparents.

A childhood hero,
the cat,
your fifth grade teacher,
the guy who once dated your sister.

Your friend’s father,
and soon after,
your own.

Next went, the refrigerator.

You go on
paying taxes,
jerking off,
drinking too much coffee
and pissing on your pant leg on the occasional Friday night.

Then it’s your turn.
