A Flame

a landscape
dark
a native moan,
the sky
painted white with milk

we run
from the savagery

wars
and treachery,
a fire
born of fears

out there—
a flame

we retreat,
you and I,
anticipating
the fire
burning itself out
or at least
being extinguished
by the rains
